  What is Health Care and Social Assistance?  
 

Health Care comprises both public and private sector operators and includes all the services offered by hospitals, specialist medical services and many other allied health services, such as dental, optometry and ambulance services.
Employment and career opportunities offered in hospitals include areas such as nursing, medicine, radiology, management, human resources, food services or technical support.
Medical and Other Health Care Services include immunology, dermatology, neurology, ophthalmology, paediatric medicine.
Diagnostic services, such as ultrasound, x-ray, pathology services, clinical psychology, dietetic, homeopathic, podiatry and speech pathology services.

The Social Assistance Services sector offers a range of Community Services. These services include the provision of temporary or ongoing assistance for those families or individuals who suffer from disabilities, need childcare services, or counselling.
The Community Services industry offers a range of services including:

  • Child Care
  • Adoption
  • Adult day care centre
  • Aged care assistance
  • Alcoholics anonymous
  • Disabilities
  • Marriage guidance
  • Mobile or permanent soup kitchens
  • Welfare counselling
  • Youth welfare

 
  What is Professional, Scientific and Technical Services?  
 

The Professional, Scientific and Technical Services Industry specialises in performing professional, scientific, and technical activities for others in a variety of industries and, in some cases, to households.
The Professional, Scientific and Technical Services include:

  • Scientific Research Services
  • Architectural, Engineering and Technical Services
  • Legal and Accounting Services
  • Advertising Services
  • Market Research and Statistical Services
  • Management and Related Consulting Services
  • Veterinary Services
  • Computer hardware & software consulting, programming
  • internet and web design consulting
  • software development and installation
  • systems analysis

Other Professional, Scientific and Technical Services, include professional photography, translation and interpretation, and meteorological services

Western Student Connections (WSC) will implement the TPTS in Dubbo and Orange to provide a supportive and case management enviroment for 20 young people across all education sectors ( 10 in Dubbo and 10 in Orange ) to assist their transition through vocational training into higher education at university.

The young people may be those who are in Year 12 in 2012 and either :

  • doing a non-ATAR HSC (vocational), or;
  • expect to obtain a low ATAR in the HSC which may not meet university entry requirments, and;
  • would benefit from following a TAFE training pathway into university

Or, they may have already completed Year 12 in 2010 or 2011 and have not successfully progressed into further vocational training or higher education since leaving school.

The target group will also have expressed an intrest in obtaining a higer education in either:

  • Health Care and Social Assistance or ;
  • Professional, Scientific and Technical Services

The qualifications for this project will be those at Certificate III or IV level and available at the TAFE NSW Western Institute Dubbo or Orange Campuses for the groups to access in 2013. This is to ensure the participants receive full support and mentoring at the local level.

TAFE enrolment will be at the Certificate III or IV level where possible, however participants may need to achieve core units from Certificate II before enrolling or as a concurrent enrolment in their chosen course.

Participants will participate in work readiness workshops, industry visits, work experience and work placement while completing the vocational training. They will also be supported to find part-time work or casual employment in their chosen industry.
