What YOUth Can Do Festival of Skills - Events for Hospitality Students and Teachers

Hospitality students and teachers have a variety of activities in which to participate during festival week. These include:

  1. 5-day Club EDU work placement (Monday to Friday)
  2. Preparation and serving of the Long Lunch (Tuesday Prep, Wednesday Long Lunch)
  3. Master Classes (Monday and Tuesday)
  4. Industry Visits (Thursday and Friday)
  5. Pop-up Restaurants (Friday Prep, Saturday Pop-up Shop Fair)
  6. Go to the Drive-In on Sunday night
  7. Attend the Local Skills, Local Jobs Expo from 5:30pm to 8:30pm on Tuesday 22 October at Devil's Elbow Brewery
  8. Attend the Disco on Wedensday night
  9. Attend the Charity Dinner on Thursday night

There is a Professional Development Dinner on the evening of Wednesday 23 October for VET Teachers

Hospitality is a growing industry, linked inexorably with the increase in foreign tourism to Australia, and this demand is continuing to drive growth in all sectors of hospitality.
Clubs represent a significant sector of hospitality and the ClubEDU program is designed to strengthen the pathway from school to employment in clubs.
When the local venues provide work placement opportunities to enhance the students’ learning, it conversely provides evaluation opportunities for the clubs to screen the students and identify the candidates with the best potential to build satisfying careers.
If you are interested in a career in the Hospitality industry, the Club EDU work placement program is for you.

The Club EDU program includes:

Student Induction – to be completed prior to placement (at least one week prior) Complete the
Club EDU Enrolment Form
for students interested in the Club EDU event.
  • Students and teacher to visit site, site tour, introduction to staff, venue safety and work placement requirements
  • may include morning/afternoon tea/lunch (fee for service)
  • training e.g. espresso coffee machine, point of sale, safe use of equipment
DAY 1 - 3
  • Student completes 3 days’ work placement at club
DAY 4 Function planning
  • Kitchen Operation Students Club chef visit school or students attend venue for master class and menu planning. Planning will include training on menu, budget/costing, culinary terms, equipment safety, characteristics of ingredients, seasonal produce, plating and presentation requirements, end of shift procedures
  • Food & Beverage students meet with F&B manager/attendant to plan table and room setup, greeting guests, serving requirements, use of espresso coffee machine, processing orders, end of shift procedures
DAY 5 Function – ClubEDU Student Restaurant
Day of function
  • Kitchen Operation Students will work in club kitchen to prepare and cook menu items, liaise with front of house staff about menu options, follow end of shift procedures
  • Food & Beverage students will arrive prior to function for briefing, table and room setup, liaise with kitchen staff about menu options, serve guests, process orders and follow end of shift procedures.
Teacher may attend days 4 & 5 of the program to gain industry currency
